The Anglo-European College of Chiropractice is registered as a limited company. Three chiropractors, Robert Beech, Donald Bennett and Elizabeth Bennett are instrumental to the venture and set about making the necessary arrangements to launch the AECC.

1968

The European Chiropractors’ Union (ECU) supported a review and restructuring of the AECC, which led to the establishment of the Board of Governors. ECU member countries agreed to contribute $144 per year to sustain the institution (approx. £1,039 or €1,525 today).

1969

The institution's name changes to "Anglo-European College of Chiropractic" (dropping the ‘e’) to align with the British Chiropractors’ Association's preferred nomenclature.

A research department is established to support the AECC’s postgraduate research efforts.

1988

The Council for National Academic Awards validates the Bachelor of Science degree at the AECC, making it the first institution in complementary healthcare to offer a validated program.

1990s
1990s image of Portsmouth Uni

Changes in UK higher education legislation saw AECC degrees awarded by the Open University and later by the University of Portsmouth. In collaboration with Portsmouth, the AECC introduced its first postgraduate MSc in Clinical Chiropractic, further solidifying its position as a leader in chiropractic education.

The AECC becomes the first school to be accredited by the newly formed European Council on Chiropractic Education.

GCC approved badge

Accreditation is received from the General Chiropractic Council, regulating chiropractic education in the UK.

2005
Bournemouth Uni

The AECC partners with Bournemouth University to validate degrees, enabling public funding for chiropractic education.

Eddie Howe opens Bournemouth Open Upright MRI at AECC 2015

The installation of an open, upright MRI scanner (1 of only 7 in the country) enhances AECC’s diagnostic capabilities. The availability of digital x-ray, video fluoroscopy, diagnostic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging showcases AECC’s outstanding collection of imaging modalities.

2017

AECC gains Taught Degree Awarding Powers, and becomes AECC University College (AECC UC)

2020

AECC UC purchases St Thomas Garnet’s School site across the road to grow its campus on Parkwood Road. The new site will be called Garnet Campus and plans are drawn up for state-of-the-art education and clinical developments.

2021

In partnership with Solent University, AECC UC launches a new PhD program which underpins our expanding research work

2023

AECC UC adds subjects such as Podiatry, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics and others to its roster. The university now offers over 25 accredited health sciences degree courses across various disciplines.

2024

Following approval from the Office for Students and the Department of Education, the institution is renamed Health Sciences University (HSU). In October the official launch of HSU is celebrated, with HRH The Princess Royal installed as its Chancellor.
